We knew this was going to be a difficult morning. A visit to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Paula our guide was superb and told us about the philosophy behind the term ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’.
We then went into central Berlin where we looked at the facade of the New Synagogue (it was built in 1866) and the site of a Jewish Boys’ School and saw brass plaques in the pavement remembering people who were deported. We later visited the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.
