RGS Blog 3 - The Power of Routines: Helping Every Student to Succeed. Mr Smith - Deputy Headteacher
At Ramsey Grammar School, we want every young person to feel settled, confident and ready to learn. One of the simplest and most effective ways we can achieve this is through clear and consistent routines.
A routine is simply a familiar sequence of actions prompted by a particular cue. Because students know what to do and what will happen next, routines require less conscious thought and free up more attention for learning.
Why do routines matter?
Think about how much easier everyday life becomes when certain actions are automatic. We do not have to make a fresh decision each time. The same applies in school.
When classroom routines are familiar and consistently applied, students can:
- settle quickly and calmly;
- focus their attention on the lesson;
- make the most of learning time; and
- understand clearly what is expected of them.
Routines can also create a valuable sense of familiarity, safety and belonging. This consistency can be particularly important for students with additional needs, who may find predictable classroom experiences especially reassuring.
Do routines limit creativity?
Not at all. In fact, routines help to create the conditions in which creativity can flourish.
When students do not have to spend their attention working out where to sit, what equipment they need or what they should be doing next, they have more capacity to think, question, discuss and solve problems. Teachers can also devote more attention to checking understanding, supporting individuals and responding to students’ needs.
This does not mean that every lesson follows exactly the same formula. Teachers draw upon a repertoire of routines, selecting the right approach for different subjects, classes and stages of learning. There will always be a place for novelty and fresh experiences, but these work best within an overall school experience that feels familiar and secure.
What does this look like at RGS?
Across the school, students will become increasingly familiar with several key routines/expectations, including:
- entering classrooms calmly and completing a uniform check;
- placing planners and equipment on desks;
- following our presentation policy;
and of course our 4 expectations
These shared routines provide students with a consistent experience across their lessons. When they are followed by everyone, every day, they can contribute to stronger learning, behaviour, attendance and school culture.
How can parents help?
You can support these routines by helping your child arrive at school prepared and ready to learn. Checking that they have the correct uniform, planner and equipment may seem like a small thing, but it helps them begin each lesson calmly and positively.
You could also ask:
- “What routines help you to settle into lessons?”
- “Which classroom routines help you learn most effectively?”
- “Have you got everything ready for tomorrow?”
Clear routines are not about removing individuality or creativity. They are about reducing unnecessary distractions, building confidence and giving every student the best possible opportunity to succeed.
At RGS, that reflects our shared commitment to Responsibility, Growth and Success, as we continue to Invest, Believe and Achieve Together.
