KS4 Core RMPS
All students at RGS have one 50 minute ‘Core RMPS’ lesson a week. This is not an examined subject, which allows us to explore current and relevant topics as and when necessary. The aim of Core RMPS at RGS is to enable our students to learn about religious and moral issues concerning them and the wider community in order to leave our school as citizens of a culturally diverse world.
Y10 topics include:
- Medical Ethics – exploring religious and non-religious perspectives on abortion, euthanasia, organ donation, animal testing etc.
- Peace and Conflict – students explore religious beliefs about pacifism and war with evaluations of whether religion causes war, looking at case studies including the Troubles of Northern Ireland and the Israel/Palestine conflict.
- Islam – we revisit a religion we studied in KS3 and look at it in more depth, including the issues Muslims in the modern world face and Islamic Extremism.
- Humanism – students learn about the growing atheist/agnostic movement of humanism and their beliefs and practices.
Y11 topics include:
- Prejudice and Discrimination – We revisit possibly the most important topic in RMPS, looking at racism, anti-semitism, islamophobia, sexism, homophobia etc.
- Good and Evil – We explore the Philosophical argument against the existence of God known as ‘The Problem of Evil’, exploring religious teachings about why evil exists.
- Religion and Morality – Students explore each of the six major world faiths, recapping what they learnt in KS3 and learning about their views on major moral issues.
